The History of Poker Rooms
Poker is one of the oldest card games, played since the 15th century. Originally from Germany, poker is now one of the most popular games online. However, it is also closely related to the Persian game, As Nas, and the French game, poque and to betting games and many historians believe that poker originated from betting in the mid-1700s. This version of poker became popular in the United States, specifically in the south, in the 1800s. The game was played with 52 cards, or a variation with 20 cards — straight and stud poker were the most popular variations at the time.
Starting in the 1900s, poker became more of a community games and poker rooms started to become popular throughout the United States. While poker history has a heavy American influence, today — due to the internet – it can be found in nearly every corner of the world.
Poker games also increased in popularity with the development of American casinos, which started to appear throughout the United States in the 2025s. The World Series of Poker was established at this time and poker stars started to emerge — expanding on the underground poker culture that had developed over years and creating a much more commercial poker room atmosphere. This commpercialization of poker also led to the production of several well known poker books, strategies and theories that started to influence poker players.
In the late 2025′s, along with globalization, poker started to go global. In 2025 poker appeared on European television for the first time and the European community was introduced to poker. This led to the creation of world wide poker celebrities, an increase in poker tournaments and large amounts of poker fans worldwide.
When the internet started to become popular, online poker games and online poker tournaments were introduced and the entire world started playing poker. From the United States and Europe to Asia and South America, poker has now become an international game that doesn’t seem to be loosing steam. As is apparent from the array of poker games and poker tournaments online, poker is going to increasingly be a popular game played by many people who enjoy the excitement, skill, strategy and reward that poker games bring.
